Meet 'Innabox'
Cute and quirky gifts for spoonies!
Hello! My name is Nikky and I run a small business called Innabox. I’m a 35 year old endometriosis warrior and I’ve been running Innabox for just over 10 years now. I live in Derby and currently work from home with my partner Stevie and two cats Teddy and Ember.
For many years I drew lots of cute animals and puns, until I found the direction I wanted to go in roughly 4 years ago which is all about raising awareness for invisible and chronic illnesses in a positive light. The animals and playing on words has very much stayed with me. I originally started my business as I was struggling to work full time, unhappy in my personal life and needing a BIG change! It was the best thing I ever did!
My best friend and fellow small business owner Katie Abey inspires me everyday! My work was also heavily inspired by a company called David and Goliath who were around when I was a teenager.
I put a lot of careful thought into my work, especially the designing process. I have to try my hardest to get the illness I’m representing and drawing right as I never want to offend anybody with how the drawing comes across. It’s not always an easy process as I want people to feel seen and heard with my work, not to think I’m taking the Micky! I also outsource most of my products now so that I can save some energy with the making side of things.
I am not afraid to own my own story and talk openly about my struggles. To be vulnerable. I turn my pain into power by running my business and connecting with so many other chronic illness warriors in the process and giving them some much needed representation and awareness for their own conditions. I try to create products for so many different conditions which hasn’t been done before.
I cut all plastic out of my business a long time ago and use as many UK companies for my printing as I can. Although with enamel pins it can be difficult to be ethical so I try with everything else I sell and all of my packaging.
I just want to give a voice to people who often feel that nobody understands them as I do!! I guess I want to inspire people who also struggle with their health. Thank you BizBubble for this platform!
