Meet Chromakane
Chromakane is a London-based artist creating experimental visual art, fashion and homeware. Her art is a playground and a journey through East and West, connecting and honouring world cultures. Ambassador of ART IS THE CURE
My name is Jessie Cohen, and I am the artist and founder behind Chromakane, a creative project and brand through which I create collections bridging visual art, fashion and homeware.
I launched Chromakane in 2020 with the ambition of connecting and honouring cultures around the world – by unifying them through a bold, abstract and almost pop art visual style. In the very beginning though Chromakane started as a lockdown project, a new form of creative release, at a time when I was looking to heal through personal mental health issues. For this reason, mental health awareness is an important part of Chromakane’s story: from the concepts and messages in each collection I create, to the partnerships and ambassadorships I embark on. Over the past two to three years, Chromakane has grown from being focussed solely on art prints, to also encompassing fine art on canvas, fashion and streetwear, homeware, tattoo art and digital art forms including augmented reality. As a small business and beyond, I aim to carry on exploring new mediums and techniques in future, and to make Chromakane a playground for creative self-expression for its multicultural collectors.
As an artist, I enjoy every opportunity to experiment with new techniques and grow through collaborations – and each creative and business decision I make pushes ethical and sustainable principles and methods. I work with reclaimed, upcycled materials or low-waste production methods for new garments, and experiment with digital technologies such as augmented reality for even more sustainable wearable collections. I also use ethically-sourced or handmade paper for my giclée prints, inkjet printing techniques which give my prints a long-lasting ‘archival’ quality, and recyclable or compostable packaging to ship orders. And Chromakane’s inspirations evolve with each collection, but remain rooted in my core values: culture, identity and emotions. So Chromakane is a brand which cares dearly about people, and more specifically about empowering people creative self-expression and wellbeing, whether personal or collective. I want Chromakane to be a brand which impacts peoples’ minds and hearts – not our planet.
Through Chromakane, I am raising awareness of the value of creative therapy as an ambassador with UK-based organisation Art Is The Cure CIC. My current partners include artrepublic, Canopy Market, DressX, Fy!, GENT London, Not On The High Street, People of Print and Rise Art; and my work has been featured in press with the likes of Aesthetica, Art Reveal, Canon View Magazine, Country Homes & Interiors, Hahnemühle and Tattoo Life.
